The mayor said the majority of protesters have remained peaceful, however, fringe groups are responsible for inciting the violence that the city has seen in recent days, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.
She called for the ICE raids to stop and added that local officials are not told when and where these raids will happen but are creating a sense of fear and terror in our communities.
"If you dial back to last Thursday, Los Angeles was peaceful. None of this was happening. All of this started when the raids were initiated in February, and there was just no reason for that. I feel like we are a case study for what happens when the federal government moves in and takes over power from the state government and from the local entities," Mayor Bass said. "If the raids were stopped, then there wouldn't even be a need for protests."
The mayor said she will reach out to President Donald Trump to speak with him directly, and said she has spoken to members of his administration, including Trump's border czar, Tom Homan.
"I tried to explain to him that the last thing our city needs is National Guard. If we needed the help, we would ask for the help. There's nothing unusual about doing that, but why did they need to take power away from the governor?" said Bass. "If the raids hadn't happened, we would not be looking at the violence in the street right now."
